GM Invests $275 Million to Build All-new Chevy Silverado

by Chevrolet in the News on October 28, 2011

Coming off three straight months of year-over-year sales increases—including robust growth of 36 percent in September alone—Chevrolet Dealer Seattle is confident the current Chevy Silverado is proving it still has what it takes to satisfy today’s demanding pickup customers. And recently, to help ensure the all-new next-generation Silverado will be able to do the same, General Motors announced a $275 million investment in the Ft. Wayne (Ind.) manufacturing facility that is home base for the company’s full-size pickups.
“Today’s announcement is great news for the hard-working members of UAW Local 2209,” said Joe Ashton, UAW vice president, representing the GM Department. “Our members’ experience and knowledge will ensure that this next generation of trucks will exceed the expectations of our customers. This is an important vehicle program for GM and the decision to locate the work in Fort Wayne demonstrates our mutual commitment to making GM a great American company.”
According to Washington DC Chevrolet Dealers, this latest move is expected to retain or add 150 jobs to the plant, which already relies on 3,400 employees, working three shifts, to keep up with sales of the Silverado and GMC Sierra. Further, it represents the final component of GM’s comprehensive, $2 billion U.S. investment program originally announced in May of this year. Chevrolet Dealer CT said t hat all told, the program will create or retain approximately 4,000 jobs in 17 facilities across eight states.
“This investment will allow us to continue building award-winning pickups that offer better fuel efficiency than ever before without sacrificing features and functionality,” said Larry Zahner, GM manufacturing manager. “We remain committed to providing customers the utility and capability of our world-class full-size pickups.”

Chevy Spark and Spark EV Ready to Ignite City-car Segment

by Chevrolet in the News on October 14, 2011

For a small car, the new Chevy Spark is set to attract a large range of drivers: First-time buyers, city dwellers and electric-vehicle supporters—and consumers who are all of the above—should all be flocking to Chevrolet dealerships when the brand’s new city car makes its debut beginning next year.
The four-seat, five-door hatchback is just a few inches longer than the Fiat 500, but it will be packed with features and content, including, in key markets, an available all-electric powertrain. And notably, that propulsion system will boast an advanced nanophosphate lithium-ion battery pack from the proven EV-battery experts at A123 Systems.
“The Spark EV offers customers living in urban areas who have predictable driving patterns or short commutes an all-electric option,” said Jim Federico, global vehicle chief engineer for electric vehicles at Chevrolet. “It complements Chevrolet’s growing range of electrified vehicles, including the Volt extended-range EV and the 2013 Malibu Eco with eAssist technology.
“The Spark EV is another step in Chevrolet’s plan to provide customers with a variety of electrification solutions to address the lifestyle and transportation needs of people around the world.”
But the gas-only Spark will be plenty efficient, too, thanks to a peppy 1.2-liter I4 engine that makes 83 hp in its North American configuration, mated to either a standard five-speed manual transmission or an available automatic. Also in the mix will be standard peace-of-mind features like an extensive powertrain warranty and GM’s OnStar in-vehicle safety and security system, as well as available upscale amenities such as a color touch-screen audio setup, Chevrolet’s MyLink connectivity system with Pandora and Stitcher Internet radio, Bluetooth functionality, chrome exterior accented, alloy wheels and heated “leatherette” seats.
As a result, “For young, urban dwellers, the 2013 Chevrolet Spark can be their key to the city,” according to Chris Perry, vice president, global Chevrolet marketing and strategy. “Spark’s vibrant exterior and interior colors make a statement, but it is a practical car, too. Affordable, maneuverable and very fuel-efficient, Spark will be easy to own and easy to drive.”
The 2013 Chevrolet Spark will make its U.S. debut at November’s L.A. International Auto Show then reach Chevy dealerships in 2012; per General Motors, the Spark EV “will be sold in limited quantities in select U.S. and global markets starting in 2013.”

Camaro ZL1 Convertible Ready For Spring Zeigler Chevrolet Schaumburg

Camaro ZL1 Convertible Ready to Power up the Top-down Fun

by Chevrolet in the News on October 14, 2011

Fresh from posting a Nurburgring lap time of just 7:41.27—nearly 40 seconds faster than the modern-day Camaro SS and quicker than supercars like the Porsche 911 GT3 and Nissan GT-R—the high-performance Camaro ZL1 will soon set another benchmark: Already the most powerful production Camaro ever, the ZL1 is now slated to launch as the most powerful Chevrolet convertible ever. In fact, with the same supercharged 6.2-liter LSA V8 as the coupe, rated at 580 hp and 556 lb.-ft. of torque, the ZL1 convertible will deliver more power than exotic drop-tops from a lot of manufacturers, including entries like the 2012 Aston Martin DB9 Volante and Mercedes SL63 AMG, as well as the 2011 Porsche 911 Turbo S and Ford Shelby GT500.
Simply put, according to Al Oppenheiser, the Camaro’s chief engineer: “The Camaro ZL1 convertible will be one of the most powerful and most capable convertibles available at any price. This is a car that is guaranteed to put a smile on your face every time you drop the top—or hit the gas.”
That’s partly because Oppenheiser and his team specifically designed the current Camaro’s body structure to provide superior convertible performance right from the start, then added significant bracing and reinforcements to up the ante even further. But not only do these improvements reduce the unwanted body motions that plague many other open-air cars, they also reduce noise and vibration in the ZL1 convertible to create a more satisfying driving experience.
Of course, it also helps that the ZL1 coupe and convertible have some of the most sophisticated vehicle-performance systems in the world. Both showcase the latest generation of GM’s Magnetic Ride Control, which can adjust damping up to 1,000 times per second, as well as the company’s exclusive Performance Traction Management system. The latter integrates Magnetic Ride Control, launch control, traction control, and electronic stability control for dramatically enhanced off-the-line acceleration and cornering.
The new Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 drop-top is scheduled to go on sale early next year—just in time for the 2012 convertible season.

The Ultimate Camaro: 2012 Carmaro ZL1 Debuts

2012 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 image
This week, the 2012 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 debuted at the Chicago Auto Show. Launching in early 2012, the new ZL1 features cutting-edge performance systems that makes it the most technologically advanced Camaro ever built.
Motivating this new model is a supercharged V-8 engine producing 550 horsepower. But aside from overwhelming power, Chevrolet insists that there’s plenty of innovative technology that will help the ZL1 really perform. This tech includes advanced and highly refined chassis and suspension systems that will help the ZL1 deliver balanced, track-ready handling and braking power.
“Camaro ZL1 is about high-tech performance and design, and is a type of car no one has ever brought to this segment previously,” said Rick Scheidt, vice president of Chevrolet marketing. “It’s the most technically advanced Camaro ever, so we’ve chosen a name from the most elite and exclusive Camaro in history.”
Although this high-performance Camaro doesn’t carry the iconic Z28 badging, the ZL1 name is derived from a 1960s era all-aluminum racing engine of the same name. A few production 1969 Camaros also carried the ZL1 designation, and went on to achieve mythical status among enthusiasts.
When developing the ZL1, engineers were tasked with creating a vehicle that provided optimal performance for road-racing circuits, while also delivering excellent driving dynamics on the street. In achieving this goal, the Camaro’s existing systems were improved upon, including its electric power steering and Magnetic Ride Control, the world’s fastest-reacting suspension system.
“Everything about the ZL1’s design is directly related to its technology and serious performance, especially aerodynamics,” said Ed Welburn, vice president, Global Design. “Our designers’ goal was to execute that function-oriented design with beautifully sculpted forms, creating an imposing, powerful persona. Function becomes the aesthetic. The intent is a car that delivers on the attitude it projects.”
Inside, the 2012 Camaro ZL1 will come standard with plenty of creature comforts as well including:
  • Six-way power driver and passenger seats
  • Unique instrument panel and door panel inserts; and ZL1-logo sill plates
  • Steering wheel audio controls with Bluetooth capability
  • Wireless PDIM and USB-port
  • Boston Acoustics premium audio system
  • Rear parking assist
  • Rear camera system (displayed in the inside rearview mirror).
Chevrolet is still developing and refining this model, but it’s currently slated to arrive in showrooms at the beginning of next year. Stay tuned for additional details.

5 Millionth Camaro Sold Zeigler Chevrolet Schaumburg

The Comeback Continues: Chevy Sells 5 Millionth Camaro

by Chevrolet in the News on August 16, 2011
Chevy Camaro image
While the Chevrolet Camaro went away for a few years, demand for the iconic muscle car never did. That kind of passion—combined with the quality and performance offered by today’s Camaro—has kept sales in high gear. In 2010, its first full year on the market, the athletic new Chevy outsold its crosstown rival the Ford Mustang by more than 7,500 units, and attracted 81,299 new Camaro owners. And not only is the car ahead of that pace through the first part of 2011, but it also recently marked a major production milestone when the 5 millionth Camaro was sold to a lucky new driver in Kentucky.
The black-on-black 1LS coupe showcased a “dovetail” spoiler, a six-speed manual transmission and a potent 3.6-liter, 312-hp V6, and it was the 225,844th Camaro sold since the fifth generation launched in March 2009. Of course, Chevy is on track to keep the momentum going, thanks an expanding lineup that now includes the Camaro Convertible, which dropped its top in February of 2011, and the high-performance Camaro ZL1.
Designed to be the most technically advanced car in its class, the Camaro ZL1 will holster a supercharged 6.2-liter LSA V8 that makes some 550 hp and offer a six-speed manual transmission with a dual-disc clutch, Magnetic Ride Control, a vented carbon-fiber hood insert, and an advanced, track-ready brake system designed collaboratively with the experts at Brembo.
Drivers can expect the ZL1 to debut early next year as the fastest Camaro ever offered by Chevrolet—which will no doubt help the brand get a quick head start toward selling its next 5 million Camaros.

Chevy Camaro ZL1 Delivers 580 Horsepower

by Chevrolet in the News on September 13, 2011

2012 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 image
It’s official: the 2012 Camaro ZL1 will be Chevy’s most powerful Camaro ever. Featuring a supercharged 6.2-liter V8 engine, the ZL1 will offer 580 horsepower and 556 lb.-ft. of torque.
While the new ZL1 will feature ample power, it’s also complemented by advanced powertrain and chassis technologies, including exclusive Performance Traction Management and third-generation Magnetic Ride Control.
“The Camaro ZL1 delivers supercar performance and technology in the sports-car segment,” said Al Oppenheiser, Camaro chief engineer. “For sheer power, the ZL1 delivers more horsepower than a Ferrari 458, more torque than an Aston Martin DB9 V12, and a better power-to-weight ratio than a Porsche 911 Carrera GTS.”
The all-aluminum LSA supercharged V8 is part of GM’s legendary small-block engine family. Not only will it give the Camaro incredible performance, but it will also meet modern emissions requirements. And, the new ZL1 is backed by General Motors’ five-year / 100,000-mile powertrain warranty.
The ZL1 is also available with Chevy’s Hydra-Matic 6L90 automatic transmission, which has been developed to handle the engine’s torque and horsepower. It even features three distinct drive modes including:
  • Drive — The shift pattern is calibrated for optimal fuel economy, including second-gear starts, while the shift feel is tuned for a smooth driving experience.
  • Sport — The shift pattern is calibrated for more aggressive driving, including first-gear starts for maximum performance.
  • Manual — In this mode, he 6L90 offers the driver true manual control, with no automatic up shifts.
“The torque is going to make the ZL1 a car you won’t want to get out of,” said John Rydzewski, assistant chief engineer for small block engines. “Not only will the ZL1 have more power and torque than the competition, we’re making it available with an optional automatic transmission, to appeal to a wider group of sports car enthusiasts.”

2012 Chevy Sonic Earns “Top Safety Pick” Status

by Chevrolet in the News on September 14, 2011
2012 Chevrolet Sonic Crash Test image
The all-new subcompact 2012 Chevy Sonic has just earned the coveted Insurance Institute for Highway Safety Top Safety Pick award. Thanks to two more air bags than its competitors, StabiliTrak electronic stability control, and a host of safety features, it excelled in the Institute’s testing.
The IIHS tests vehicles to determine how well they protect occupants in front and side crash tests, in rollovers via a roof strength test, and in simulated rear impacts to evaluate seat and head restraints for protection against neck injuries. In all of these areas, the Sonic achieved “good” scores.
Safety was a priority for engineers, and the “Top Safety Pick” award didn’t come as much of a surprise. In addition to 10 air bags, the Sonic offers a body structure incorporating a single welded side ring unit. Also, more than 60 percent of the vehicle safety cage consists of high-strength steel.
“We developed Sonic to exceed our customer’s expectations of the subcompact market, both in the fun-to-drive performance characteristics and the segment-leading safety features,” said Joaquin Nuño-Whelan, Sonic vehicle line director and vehicle chief engineer. “This designation by IIHS confirms that Chevy customers can buy a subcompact with top safety performance.”
Other unique safety features on the 2012 Sonic include:
  • LATCH system (Lower Anchors and Top tethers for Children)
  • Six months of complimentary OnStar Directions and Connections service, including stolen vehicle assistance and automatic crash response
  • Power-assisted front disc and rear drum brakes with panic brake assist technology
With this rating the Sonic joins the Volt and the Cruze, two other small cars that recently received a 2011 IIHS Top Safety Pick award.
