2013 Chevy Corvette 427 With Video

Chevy Unchains a New Corvette 427 Convertible

by Chevrolet in the News on January 20, 2012
Consider it the ultimate example of automotive sibling rivalry: Shortly after the announcement of the Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 Convertible—destined to set new performance benchmarks for a Camaro drop-top—big brother is answering with the fastest, most capable convertible Corvette to ever come down the production line: The 2013 Chevy Corvette 427 Convertible.
It’s a reincarnation of a classic that also celebrates some notable landmarks for Corvette.
“The 2013 model year will be historic for Corvette, marking its 60th Anniversary and the final year for the current ‘C6’ generation,” said Chris Perry, vice president, Global Marketing and Strategy for Chevrolet. “We couldn’t think of a more fitting way to celebrate these milestones than bringing back one of the most-coveted combinations in the brand’s history—the Corvette convertible and a 427 cubic-inch engine.”
For the metrically inclined, that means the latest Corvette gets a 7.0-liter heart transplant, with the donor being the hi-po Corvette Z06. And keep in mind: This hand-built LS7 engine pumps out 505 hp and 470 lb.-ft. of torque. Installed in the 427 Convertible, the results include a 0-60 time of 3.8 seconds, a quarter-mile time of 11.8 seconds and top speed north of 190 mph. Lateral acceleration is an impressive 1.04 g.
The only choice in transmission is a six-speed manual, but there is one unique option available car’s powertrain: Corvette 427 Convertible owners can enjoy the Corvette Build Experience, in which they travel to GM’s Performance Build Center in Wixom, Mich., to assemble their car’s engine themselves.
Also included are other core elements drawn from the high end of the current Corvette lineup, like the driveline and rear axle system of the Z06, ZR1-style Michelin PS2 tires wrapped around the lightweight, machine-faced wheels that debuted on the 2012 Z06, standard Magnetic Selective Ride Control—one of the fastest-reacting suspension enhancers in the world—and plenty of carbon fiber body work.
In fact, thanks to a carbon-fiber raised hood, Z06-style fenders and floor panels, with an available carbon-fiber front splitter and rocker panels that are standard on the 60th Anniversary package, the 427 Convertible weighs a mere 3,355 lbs. That’s good for a power-to-weight ratio of 6.64 (each horsepower is driving 6.64 lbs. of Corvette) and good enough to beat drop-tops such as the Porsche 911 Turbo S Cabriolet, Audi R8 5.2 RSI Spyder, Aston Martin DBS Volante Convertible and Ferrari California Convertible.
The rest of the new 60th Anniversary package, which will be available on all 2013 Corvette models, adds an Arctic White exterior/Blue Diamond interior, a cabin swathed in leather and suede, a ZR1-style rear spoiler, 60th Anniversary badging and logos, gray-painted brake calipers and, for convertible models, a blue top. Chevy also will offer a graphics upgrade to the package for further flair, courtesy of full-length Pearl Silver Blue racing stripes, including, for convertibles, a stripe stitched right into the top.
Both the Corvette 427 Convertible and the 60th Anniversary package are set to reach dealers this summer.

Corvette Recognizes Its Heritage at 2011 SEMA Show

The storied tradition of America’s top sports car will open another chapter at this year’s Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) event, as two Corvette show cars, each honoring a different aspect of Corvette history, make their world premieres.
To help recognize the 30th annual “Corvettes at Carlisle” gathering—held each year in Carlisle, Pa., and one of the largest in North America—Chevy is introducing the Corvette Carlisle Blue Grand Sport Concept. Based on the Corvette Grand Sport, the show car shows off a new exterior color—the aptly named Carlisle Blue Metallic—as well as the first appearance of silver-painted Torque 2 wheels and full-length Pearl White racing stripes.
Also featured on the Carlisle Blue Grand Sport:
  • A hand-built LS3 6.2-liter V8 capable of up to 436 hp and 428 lb.-ft. of torque
  • Six-speed manual transmission
  • Magnetic Selective Ride Control
  • Gray six-piston brake calipers
  • Goodyear F1 Supercar Gen 2 tires
  • Dual-mode exhaust system
  • Cyber Gray headlamps
  • Premium nine-speaker Bose touchscreen sound system
  • Plenty of Genuine Corvette Accessories, including carbon-fiber ground effects and a GRAND SPORT hood blanket, ebony floor mats, console lid and racing pedal package
In addition, to help salute Ron Fellows’ 2011 induction to the National Corvette Museum Hall of Fame, Chevy has developed the perfect way to celebrate one of the winningest racers ever to get behind the wheel of its flagship sports car: The Corvette Z06 Ron Fellows “Hall of Fame” Tribute. The Tribute car takes the ultimate Corvette—the ultra-high-performance Z06—and gives it an aggressive Torch Red Exterior, accented by graphics that pay homage to Fellows’ many accomplishments for Corvette Racing. The car also benefits from:
  • Z06 Performance Package (Z07)
  • Magnetic Selective Ride Control
  • CFZ carbon-fiber package with splitter and rocker moldings
  • Carbon-fiber raised hood
  • Black headlamp housings and mirrors
  • Red brake calipers
  • Ebony interior with red stitching
  • Suede-trimmed steering wheel, shift knob, parking brake handle and armrests with red stitching
  • Special seats
  • Genuine Corvette Accessory Racing Pedal Package
And while neither of these SEMA Corvettes will be available to the public anytime soon, the 2012 lineup of production models is ready to roll at local dealerships across the country.

2012 Corvette: America’s Best Gets Better

by Chevrolet in the News on May 24, 2011

After pushing Corvette performance to new levels with the incredible ZR1, and then commemorating Chevy’s 100th anniversary with the debut of the Chevrolet Centennial Edition, the brand has re-set the bar once more by unleashing significant upgrades for the 2012 model year.
“We constantly strive to make the Corvette a better car on the road and the track,” says Tadge Juechter, Corvette vehicle line director and chief engineer. “For 2012, the Corvette lineup achieves its highest performance level ever, while at the same time being easier to drive and enjoy thanks to several changes and new features inside the car.”
It all starts in the Corvette’s cabin, where the entire 2012 lineup gets a thorough interior refresh that includes a new seat design with larger, more supportive bolsters and available Microfiber suede inserts; a revised steering wheel that showcases streamlined switch trim and wrapped spokes, along with different badging for each different Corvette model; a padded center console and armrests; and a new uplevel audio system from Bose. The fresh setup boasts nine speakers (two more than the previous system), and includes new tweeters and improved bass performance. In addition, customers can now choose from four brake-caliper colors—red, yellow, silver or gray—to further fine-tune their ‘Vette’s appearance.
But the big news comes at the top of the Corvette lineup, where the big boys play. The two best-performing Corvettes—the lightweight Z06, boasting a 505-hp V8, and the ZR1, living up to its title as the ultimate Corvette with a supercharged 638 horses under the hood—get some fine-tuning of their own. Among their available performance-oriented enhancements: New Michelin Cup ZP competition-style tires, developed by the same Michelin engineers who are behind the rubber for Corvette Racing’s American Le Mans Series efforts. The 285/30-19 (front) and 335/25-20 (rear) tires are then wrapped around all-new aluminum wheels, available with either satin-black or machined finishes. And not only are they five pounds lighter than the outgoing wheels, but they’re stronger, too.
The 2012 model year also will see the introduction of Corvette’s exclusive Performance Traction Management (PTM) technology to the Z06. PTM helps manage torque delivery for optimum performance and, when combined with the new wheel/tire combination, helped cut three seconds from the Corvette’s lap times during testing at the Virginia International Raceway.
Other new optional goodies include a full-width racing-style spoiler for both the Z06 and ZR1, as well as the addition of Magnetic Selective Ride Control—the world’s fastest-reacting suspension technology—for the Z06.
Production of the 2012 Chevrolet Corvette lineup is expected to begin in July.
